How Children Can Help In The Kitchen

Do your children enjoy helping you bake and cook?  Miss C loves helping in the kitchen.  When she hears me pulling pots out of the cabinets, she runs into the kitchen to ask what she can do to help.  Miss S is a little less enthusiastic, but is a willing helper with certain tasks.

It will take you longer to prepare food and there will be more of a mess in the kitchen than usual, but having your children learn this important life skill is well worth it.

Miss C helping in the kitchen

Here are some of the things my girls enjoy doing in the kitchen:

  • Placing pepperoni or mushrooms on pizza
  • Pushing buttons on the blender or mixer
  • Helping me to hold the mixer while I use it
  • Mixing!
  • Kneading dough
  • Rolling out cookie dough
  • Cracking eggs
  • Pouring pre-measured ingredients into the bowl
  • Tearing lettuce
  • Chopping mushrooms (Miss S)
  • Decorating cookies – helping squeeze the icing out of the bag and decorating with sprinkles/candy
  • Helping to find the ingredients in the pantry
  • Using the pepper grinder
  • Grating cheese (Miss S)
  • Greasing pans (“painting” with the pastry brush)
  • Helping use the can opener
  • Helping stir at the stove (with close supervision)
  • Setting the table (laying out cutlery and napkins)
  • Washing up (I run lukewarm water and let Miss C clean all the measuring cups and spoons.  She loves all the bubbles)

Do you have any other ideas of how children can help in the kitchen?

What do your own children enjoy?

Reading the recipe (step by step) is one of the things my kids do to help.

I admire you for taking the time to teach your kids a necessary skill! My mom also took the strategy of gradually introducing us to ever more complicated kitchen tasks, with the result that every one of us, by the age of 12, was fully capable of preparing a company dinner for 10 on our own. My baby sister is 8 and she’s just learning the ins and outs of the kitchen. 🙂

Thanks for stopping by Rachel. Well done to your mom, it’s always good to know how to feed yourself!

Great post! Our daughter has been working in the kitchen at a very young age and it has been such a blessing! She now can make full meals and cleans up the messes after herself. We often get French cuisine with many courses! . It is worth every ounce of your time when they are younger 🙂 Thanks for sharing this on the Art of Home-Making Mondays this week!

Great post. It is very important to our daughters (even our boys) training to have them help in the kitchen. It is true, I agree, that there is more mess when they do, but even helping to clean this up is good training. My 9 year old is a great help in the kitchen and is now packing the dishwasher and cleaning up the kitchen after our evening meal. Thanks for sharing at Good Morning Mondays. Blessings
