Small Ways To Show Kindness

January 10, 2017 by Debbie 14 Comments

A small gesture of kindness can have such a positive impact on both the giver and receiver and may start a ripple effect.

One of my goals this year is to practice kindness towards myself and others. I am going to try to be more intentional about showing others that I care.

Here are 8 small ways to show kindness.

1  Smile

Smile – a lot, make eye contact and acknowledge people. “A warm smile is the universal language of kindness” ~ William Arthur Ward

2  Hold the door open

Holding the door open for someone does not take much time, but could make a difference in someone else’s day.

3  Let someone go ahead of you in line

I like to do this when I have a shopping cart full of groceries and the person behind me only has one or two items.

4  Give someone a compliment

Give someone a sincere compliment. It costs nothing and it’s a great way to make someone feel special.

5  Speak kindly

Be mindful of the way you talk to people, your tone of voice and the words you use. Practice speaking kindly and treating others with respect.

“Kind words can be short and easy to speak but their echoes are truly endless” ~ Mother Teresa

6  Use your manners

Saying “please” and “thank you” shows an appreciation for other people. Good manners never go out of style.

7  Listen

When someone needs to talk, listen with your full attention. This is a great way to show them that they are important to you.

8 Write A Thank You Note

This could be to someone in your community who has made a positive impact on your life such as a firefighter, teacher, nurse, local business owner or neighbour.

Never underestimate the impact you could have on someone’s day by being kind.

We can all use a little more kindness in our lives.  How are you showing kindness today?

I often will let someone go ahead of me in line – especially if they have a young child. People are so appreciative when you do!

Love these reminders of how just a simple act can be a way to show kindness to someone else. I often look for ways to compliment people I pass throughout my day. However, I know I need to be a better listener at times ~ I hadn’t specifically thought of that as a way to show kindness, but it truly is. I know how good it makes me feel when I can tell someone is truly listening to what I’m saying.

Hope you have a great day!

All good idea but my favorite is listen – most people listen while thinking about what they are going to say. Giving someone your total attention is the greatest gift imaginable.

I love this list! Isn’t it amazing what a simple smile can do? I did it last week to a woman trying to be rude at a store and she stopped blustering and walked away, and I did nothing more than smile. Gotta love it! Thank you for sharing your post at the #happynowlinkup
