Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you have too much bread at home? Did you go grocery shopping and get enticed by the displays of raisin bread, baguettes, sourdough or brioche?

If you find yourself in this position and don’t want to waste the bread, here are five delicious uses for stale bread.

1. Breadcrumbs

Breadcrumbs are so easy to make and are great to have on hand for adding to meatloaf, making treacle tart or as a topping for baked mac and cheese.

2.  Croutons

Homemade croutons are delicious and simple to make.  They can be added to salads, used in French Onion Soup or as a base for stuffing.  Making your own at home lets you control the flavors and it tastes better than store bought.

3.  Stuffing

Aaahhh stuffing!  My favorite part of holiday meals!  Delicious and easy to customize to the tastes of your family.

4.  Bread Pudding

Bread pudding is a bread-based dessert made with stale bread and milk or cream.  It is a wonderful comfort food.  I love mine with sultanas, cinnamon and a large scoop of ice cream on the side.

5.  French Toast

French Toast is a great treat for Sunday breakfast or for a special brunch.  It can be as simple or as decadent and elegant as you want.  It is the perfect way to use up stale bread.

How do you use stale bread?

Sometimes I use stale bread to make a bread casserole (with bakon, a mixture of eggs and cream, some nutmeg, and cheese) which I bake in the oven and eat with a salad. I also love to make French toast:-)

I do all of the above, but this year I want to try Panzanella once my tomatoes ripen.

Sometimes I just throw my stale bread in the freezer so that I can decide later how I want to use it.

I’ve never made bread pudding, but you make it sound yummy.

Thanks for sharing these great tips. Pinning them!

Great ideas for using up old bread. I don’t usually have leftover bread with 4 kids, but if I do I make bread crumbs or French toast.
