Five Uses for Dish Soap

March 18, 2015 by Debbie 13 Comments

We all know that dish soap is great for washing dishes, but it is useful for so many other household chores.   Here are my favourite five uses for dish soap.

Green bottle of dish soap on counter with text which reads Five Uses For Dish Soap

1.  Homemade Bubbles

Mix 1 cup water, 2 tbsp corn syrup and 4 tbsp soap together in a small bowl. Pour into a bubble container and enjoy!

2.  Stain Remover

Dish soap is a great pre-wash treatment. Apply directly to grease stains on your clothing and rub in with your fingers. Rinse with cool water and launder as you normally would.

3.  Ice Pack

Fill a freezer bag half full with dish soap and freeze it. Double bag to prevent leaking. This will not freeze solid, but will remain flexible so you will be able to manipulate it.

4.  Trap Fruit Flies

Pour approximately half a cup of apple cider vinegar into a bowl. Fruit flies love the smell of fermentation and are attracted to the vinegar. Add a drop or two of soap. This breaks the surface tension so the flies will sink and drown.

5.  Window Cleaner

Add a few drops of dish soap to a bucket of warm water and use to wash your windows.

Do you have a favourite use for dish soap?

Great tips! I love the one about using dish soap in an ice pack, I wouldn’t have thought to do that, pinning to give it a try!

I would love if you would come share this, and any of your other posts, at What’d You Do This Weekend? The party is open now at http://joylovefood.com/whatd-you-do-this-weekend-9/ ๐Ÿ™‚

My son loves playing with bubbles. I will have to try and make my own with dish soap. Thanks for sharing that. We have used it in a fruit fly catcher before; in fact, just last week. I’m here from the Thursday Favorite Things Blog Hop.

These are some great ideas, for my window cleaner I like to mix in some vinegar and alcohol with the dish soap, there is something about this combo that works really well! I actually use the same combo in my homemade cleaning wipes too. I love using items I already have on hand to clean with. I never thought about using dish soap as an icepack or fruit fly trapper, will totally have to try these!
