How To Clean Make Up Brushes

May 27, 2015 by Debbie 15 Comments

When was the last time you cleaned your make up brushes?

It’s not something we often think about, but make up brushes should be washed at least once a month as make up, natural oils and bacteria can build up on them.  Cleaning your brushes regularly also keeps the bristles soft and supple.

How To Clean Your Brushes

Soap on a white plate

Squirt a small amount of mild soap or shampoo into your hand or a plate. I like to use Dr. Bronner’s.

Make up brush dipped into soap

Wet the make up brush and lather it up in the soap. Try to wet only the bristles while avoiding the metal part of the brush, as this can loosen the glue over time.

Make up brush in bowl of water

Swirl in a bowl of water until the water runs clear from the brush.  Squeeze out excess water.

Make up brush on towel

Lay a small hand towel out on the counter.  Roll one end up.  Place the brushes on the towel with the handle on the rolled end.  This will prevent water dripping into the handle.

Don’t forget the handles! Saturate a paper towel with rubbing alcohol and rub over the handle of your brushes.

I love this! My brushes are long overdue for a cleaning, but I’ve been avoiding it because I wasn’t sure what an easy method to clean them would be. I love how easy this is. I’ll be trying this this week! I’m going to pin this so that I can refer back to it in the future.

Thank you for linking-up to Wearing with Wisdom .
Great idea ! I saw the other day that Dr.Bronners now has a rose scented soap . That would be so lovely for make-up brushes . I will pick some up next time I am shopping .
    Thanks again,
    Leticia

This is much easier than what I had been doing, and I love the tip about rolling up one end of the towel for drying.

I clean my brushes similar to this method. I’ve had my brushes for years, but using this method has made them look and feel as though they are new. Thanks for sharing your technique! I found your post at Coffee and Conversation.

My brushes could use a cleaning… I never seem to get (or take) the time to do this as often as I should. Thanks for sharing at the #HomeMattersParty – we’re looking forward to what you have to share next week. 🙂

It’s one of those jobs that you just don’t think about, but it feels good to use a clean brush! Have a great week.
