How To Get Motivated To Clean

April 30, 2015 by Debbie 17 Comments

I love homemaking, but sometimes I’m really not motivated to clean my house. We all love having clean homes, but don’t enjoy the process of getting them that way.  Here are some tips that may help.

1.  View it as your exercise for the day

Cross off two items on your to-do list at once! Make sure you wear flexible clothing so you are not restricted in your movements. Cleaning your house exercises all the major muscle groups as you are walking, stretching, bending and lifting.

2. Put on energizing music

Play music that gives you energy, lifts your mood and can make you work faster and your home will be clean before you know it.

3. Set a deadline

Invite a friend over for coffee or for dinner. You now know that you only have so much time to clean and you will make sure it is done. Or you can put on a timer and see if you can beat it. A lot of times, the tasks we need to complete don’t actually take as long to do as we think they do.

4. Start small

Choose a room and divide it up into sections. For example, clean your living room by picking up all the cushions, moving toys into a toy box, dusting, then vacuuming.  Take baby steps and it will get done.

5. Change your perspective

If you grumble and believe that your work is drudgery, it will feel difficult. Consider your work as an act of service done in love for your family.

Happy cleaning!

These are great tips. I’ve been so unmotivated lately, and I think these practices will help me get back on track!

Great tips, Debbie! I always have to motivate myself to clean. I’m not the type of person who ever just ‘feels’ like cleaning. I always set a timer and play some fun music. My 3-year-old has learned that if there is music playing in the kitchen to stay out or get roped into helping! I love your idea of using it as exercise! Thanks for sharing! I’m glad I found you over at Good Morning Mondays!

Great motivators! I laughed about viewing housework as exercise, because that really does make me feel better about it. Haha. I am also a list person. Checking off those boxes gives me a sense of accomplishment.

For me, it is the time of day that is the most important. If I don’t clean first thing in the morning, it doesn’t happen. I need to clean, uninterrupted, by little ones. As soon as the kids get up, it is all over and my motivation is shot.

I can so relate. If I don’t get up super early to exercise and clean up before the kids get up, it is so much harder to get anything done. With a 4 year old and a crawling 8 month old, my focus has to be on them…..if I turn my back for a minute, who knows what craziness I will come back to!

You can also pretend that someone is coming over in 15 minutes. That’s what motivates me to clean.

Great tips, I have found having certain must do daily tasks and a different zone for each day of the week has really helped stay on top of things. Music is definitely a must have and I totally agree that perspective plays a huge role in how we feel about doing things. Thanks for sharing

Thank you for sharing your great ideas with us at Good Morning Mondays. I agree I like a clean home but sometimes it does take me a bit to get motivated. I find having visitors for a meal helps me get started. Blessings

I had to made a habit out of it. I NEVER had to do anything around the house until my 26th when I moved to Belgium to live with my partner. It was not something I was accustomed to do.
There is still a lot I can do better, but I will eventually get there.
Great minutes tips. Thanks for sharing them.

Luckily I have a bit of OCD so that ends up being my motivation. But for those that don’t feel the same as I do, these are great tips! Thanks for sharing at the #HomeMattersParty. We can’t wait to see what you share with us next week!
